Crazy Rich Asians Trailer: A Clash of Wealth and Values

It's an over-the-top rom-com and a change of scenery for your summer entertainment.

The first trailer for Crazy Rich Asians is released, offering the basic plot of this summer rom-com. Constance Wu (Fresh Off The Boat) plays American-born Chinese professor Rachel Chu, who is astonished by the life of the Singaporean wealthy.

Based on the best-selling novel by Kevin Kwan, which spawned two successful sequel books, Crazy Rich Asians follows Rachel as she spends her summer vacation with her boyfriend Nick (Henry Golding) in Singapore and attends "the wedding of the year" between a bachelor, who is Nick's friend, and a high-profile fashionista. Rachel learns about Nick's powerful and influential family as she navigates the lifestyle of an absurdly rich few. Nick turns out to be a much-desired man, and Rachel realizes she is becoming the target of backstabbing and dirty tricks.

The various, baffling personalities around her includes Nick's cousin Astrid Leong (Gemma Chan, Transformers: The Last Knight) and Eleanor Young (Michelle Yeoh)--her boyfriend's demanding mother who opposes the idea of Rachel being with Nick. Not just a typical rom-com about personal and family lives, Crazy Rich Asians pits the American middle-class values against the rising glamorous lifestyle of new Asian money.

Jon M. Chu (Step Up 2: The Streets) directs the movie, with Sonoya Mizuno (Ex Machina), Awkwafina (upcoming Ocean's 8), and Ken Jeong (The Hangover) co-starring.

Crazy Rich Asians is due in theaters this August 17.
