Jodie Foster returns to big-screen acting after 5 years working behind the camera.
Writer Drew Pearce's feature debut Hotel Artemis released the first trailer, teasing an interesting premise. The stellar cast includes Jodie Foster, Sterling K. Brown (Black Panther), Jeff Goldblum, Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy), Sofia Boutella (The Mummy), Charlie Day (Pacific Rim: Uprising), Jenny Slate (Obvious Child), Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta), Zachary Quinto (Star Trek), and Kenneth Choi (Wolf of Wall Street).
In Hotel Artemis, Foster plays the Nurse, the rule-abiding caretaker and administrator of the eponymous medical establishment in a near-future L.A. This is her first starring role after 5 years since Neil Blomkamp's Elysium. During the time, she directed the thriller Money Monster and a handful episodes of Netflix's series like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, and Black Mirror's "Arkangel."
The plot kicks in when Waikiki (Brown), the leader of a heist, and his crew are injured after pulling a successful job. It turns out that crew member Honolulu (Henry) also took from a security guard a pen-sized container of $18-million value, whose owner is attacking Hotel Artemis to retrieve it. With others trapped inside Hotel Artemis, Waikiki must fight the deadly force around them to get outside.
The premise surely reminds us of John Wick's The Continental and other establishments, where only criminals with membership can enter. Director Pearce, who wrote Iron Man 3 and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, fills his original script with colorful characters and sardonic humor. Among the players are the villain Wolf King (Goldblum), Nice (Boutella)--a menacing assassin, and Everett (Bautista)--a "health care professional" too devoted to his job. There's also a character by Evan Jones credited as Trojan, so we can expect a lot of betrayal here.
Hotel Artemis is due in theaters on June 8.
