The silent archer gets no love from Avengers: Infinity War marketing campaign.
For MCU fans who are rooting for Hawkeye, the Russo brothers have good news for you. Jeremy Renner's archer has been missing in all of the Avengers: Infinity War marketing material--even the trailers, and the posters also exclude his name. The recent Legacy TV Spot even goes so far as cropping him out of the frame. We can't help but asking the question, Is he being sidelined here?
In an interview with Joe.ie, the Infinity War directors deny the rumors about the exclusion of Hawkeye while teasing enough of their plan for him:
Anthony Russo: All will be revealed.
Joe Russo: We keep saying, 'Patience is a virtue,' we did not forget the twice-nominated Jeremy Renner. We just cooked up a story for him that is a little bit of a long play. Not a short play.
Among Avengers members, Hawkeye always gets the least attention to characterization due to his mortality and lack of showmanship. Even Black Widow and Hulk got their appearances as key characters in, respectively, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Thor: Ragnarok. With this assurance by the Russos, we can expect Hawkeye to enter the mix as an important player in Avengers 4. His absence on posters could be another marketing shenanigan, which fits Hawkeye's low-key lifestyle in the movie, especially Avengers: Age of Ultron.
In a Screen Rant interview, the duo confirmed Hawkeye will be on a side quest:
Some made certain decisions and others made other decisions that led to different paths in them dealing with oversight in this movie in a different way. So Hawkeye’s on his own journey in this movie.
Theories suggest Hawkeye be recruiting for his West Coast Avengers or working under his new identity, Ronin. Whatever it is, Hawkeye's role in the master plan is hidden like most of other details. The Russos made a huge effort to ensure the secrecy, and only the movie itself can show what we're wondering about.
Meanwhile, treat yourself with some Hawkeye-centric materials:
I'm guessing that this is one large fold-out poster and we just haven't seen the bottom half yet... pic.twitter.com/eaBrI3vaq5— Philip Kennedy (@philipkennedy) March 16, 2018
