X-Men: Dark Phoenix & New Mutants Are Delayed For Heavy Reshoots

There are various reasons for the delay of these X-Men movies.

After X-Men: Apocalypse closes the X-Men prequel trilogy without much impression, Fox ventured into more daring directions as they found the selling points of Deadpool more appealing. Logan proved it was the right move, and Deadpool 2 is set to continue Fox's streak of unique movies. X-Men: Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants are the next two installments, which expand the world of mutants with the younger generation.

As reported yesterday, both of them are further delayed for 2019 releases, after a previous delay for New Mutants.

But ComicBook just revealed that both movies are undergoing heavy reshoots to fix major plot points, which means they could turn out two brand-new movies later.

Actress Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays Magik in New Mutants, told The Playlist that the one new character (possibly Warlock, a mutant/technarchy), or two, will please fans of the source material. However, Collider reported that the reshoot takes up nearly half of the movie, which was originally directed by Josh Boone. Fox also wants to cash in on the horror tone after fans reacted positively to the scares in the first teaser.

The Simon Kinberg-directed crossover Dark Phoenix meets bigger obstacles. Its reshoot is the result of lower-than-expected test screening while there are rumors about adding the Skrulls into the mix. Also, Dark Phoenix is pushed to February 14, 2019 because its lead actress Sophie Turner will be busy with Game of Thrones in the later half of 2018. Scheduling conflict is the biggest reason for the delay as the movie involves many other high-profile stars (Jessica Chastain, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, etc.)
