Leading man Tom Cruise reveals first official image, director Christopher McQuarrie explains title.
The next installment of this Tom Cruise-led action-spy franchise is officially named Mission: Impossible – Fallout.
The star took to Instagram for the movie's first official image, which shows agent Ethan Hunt dangling outside of a wobbly helicopter.
Paramount released the synopsis, as below:
"The best intentions often come back to haunt you. MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT finds Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team (Alec Baldwin, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames) along with some familiar allies (Rebecca Ferguson, Michelle Monaghan) in a race against time after a mission gone wrong. Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, and Vanessa Kirby also join the dynamic cast with filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie returning to the helm."
It looks like the plot will go in familiar directions, not without its unique selling points: compelling set pieces and death-defying stuntwork by actor-producer Cruise himself.
McQuarrie spoke to Empire about what Fallout means for the franchise:
"The title has multiple meanings in the film, from the literal to the figurative. There is the threat of nuclear terrorism hanging over the movie, which is the literal threat. There’s [also] the notion that what’s happened in the movie is the end result of choices that Ethan Hunt has made in his life. It’s Ethan’s past come back to haunt him. It’s the fallout of all his good intentions."
Mission: Impossible – Fallout is directed by Christopher McQuarrie and stars the returning cast of Ving Rhames, Michelle Monaghan, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, as well as the notable addition of Alec Baldwin, Henry Caville, Angela Bassett, and Vanessa Kirby (The Crown).
The movie is out on July 27, 2018.
